Sculpture

Since graduating from Norwich School of Art & Design in 2003 I have continued to dedicate space and time to making sculpture. Alongside designing and making more utilitarian work, it has become an increasingly important way of thinking and exploring materially, outside of the constraints imposed by the functional.

The work I make is usually rooted in an exploration of material and process. I think of it as a form of play, between mind, body and material. A poetry of materiality. Through a visceral connection with wood, trees and landscape, I’m interested in pursuing craft skills and processes into unfamiliar territory, and in doing so, opening up a dialogue between the natural world, and cultural and historical aspects of craft and object making. The things I make, sculpture or otherwise, are all concerned with the same fundamental principals of form, surface, weight, texture and balance, and a fascination with how people interact with objects in space.
